So often we face barriers to communication with others due to differences of opinion/perspective, lack of attention or interest, emotional barriers, or sometimes we have different communication styles.
When we are in relationship it is important to take a step back and try a few of these communication techniques to seek clarity and resolve conflict:
✨Active listening- engage with your partner, paraphrase and reflect back what was said
✨Utilize I statements- take responsibility for how you feel. When you don’t the communication focuses on blame, accusation and defensiveness.
✨Respect- when you can display a mutual respect it makes it easier to be vulnerable and open
✨Support- show empathy for the other persons feelings and needs. Be emotionally supportive and validate their experience.
✨Openness & Honesty- The foundation for trust begins with honesty and facilitates healthy communication
